The Heather on The Hill

The title comes from the musical of Brigadoon (1954).

It fits Heather Powrie and her 100th run in the BBQ Stakes today.

Her first run was on 4 th April 2007.

She missed last week's run, but turned up early today, on her trusty Bicycle.

Her 100 th run T-shirt was so ready for her that she was wearing it as soon as she could put it on.

Peter Burke, in a personal best on his 10th run last week of  26:00 was the timekeeper and he didn't miss a beat. George Pagotellis has now completed 1 year of running the stakes and was again, one of the backmarkers today. George as usual cheered himself when his name was called.

52 competed and a couple of the ladies ran half the course, and came back early, it being a bit hot for them to go further, but promising themselved to run the entire course next week.
The winner today, Matthew Murphy, on his 537 th run with 15 wins, had a time across the line of 40:30.  his P.B. is  22:11 on 8th September 2010.  Second today was Simon Heineken, and third eligible was Jeff King on 41:17, from IP Australia, auguring well for the teams event next week.

Carolyne Kramar again ran the course with her I Phone supplying the music to run by.

Roxie Tanner found it a bit hot today, after going for a run early in the morning, so may scratch herself when the weather is so hot.

Julie Quinn missed the run today, but she was named as the Team ACT Sports star for the month of September 2012, togather with David Baldwin, for Rogaining.

Axel Godeck trains with a Dragon Boat team, and told me that a huge number of Dragon Boat teams regularly train and compete throughout the year.

350 th running of Lake Ginninderra Handicap

They came streaming to the start for the chance to run in this handicap milestone.

New starters today attracted 5 new runners, and of course a new starters prize.

Last month's winner, Jim Aravanis took first place again, from the  39 runners in the field who participated.  They hegotiated their way around the lake and after the run, had a long walk around the area of the lake that is undergoing extensive excavation works.

Looks like that work will be taking a long time to finish.

I think Tim Goodwell was second, and Michael Aylott was there to run on this occasion, he was one of the organisers for a long time, as was Richard Scutter for a period of 15 years, The 1987 record of Andrew's brother Paul Sutcliffe  still stands as does Carol Ey's record for the women. 

Lake Ginninderra 350 th Handicap

Just a reminder that the 350th running of the
Lake Ginninderra Handicap is on  Tuesday 30th October.

 The weather is looking good so hopefully we will see 
 a good crowd there to celebrate the occasion.

BBQ Stakes 24 th October 2012

Chief timekeeper was Richard Jukes, and chief recorder was Tim Wright.

Gabrielle Wright  was last to finish, but showed her determination, by finishing with a smile.

Carolyne Kramar and Judy Kuleaz started early and were the first to cross the finishing line.

Axel Godeck continued with his comeback, and finished 58 th today, Daniel Buckley edged him out by one place, and Kathleen Bleakley was around those placings.

Today's winner was having his 10 th run,Peter Burke, Steven,  I did not catch his surname, second  at 40:44 was Matthew Murphy, one of the backmarkers to start.

Julie Quinn was mentioned as a stormer to win the pointscore this year, only a few weeks left to pick up those vital last runs points.
Caroline Campbell finished with 42:43, a regular performer. Robert Ey was 53 rd and Roger Pilkington 54 th, they run together. Gary Bowen was 50 th, Helen Larmour was 56 th.

Rad Leovic, although he travelled to New Zealand for a triathlon, decided wisely not to start because of the appalling conditions at the time, the swim leg would have been extremely chilly amd very testing for the competitors.

Vale Stuart Reid

My sympathies, to his family and to all his friemds, on this sad occasion, the passing of Stuart.

He was  a vital and active member in ACTVAC, serving in so many capacities, and he will be so well remembered for his numerous contributions to the club over so many years.

His funeral, announced in The Canberra Times, will be held at St Andrews Presbyterian Church, State Circle, Forrest,  Friday, 26 th October,  at 11 a.m..

KarunaHenderson puts cycling skills on ice

She's shaken her competition illness curse and Karuna Henderson hopes her renewed passion for skating will catapult her to a personal best and international selection.
Less than a year after deciding to chase an ACT Academy of Sport scholarship in cycling, Henderson has returned to skating and will join the capital's top competitors at the ACT championships today and tomorrow.
As the only skater in the senior division, the teenager faces the strange task of competing against herself.
It would be easy for Henderson to routine lightly with national championships selection almost guaranteed.

 

It's the second year in a row Henderson has had no rivals in Canberra, but the 17-year-old wants to improve on her 94.09 personal best and rise up the Australian rankings.
Henderson finished fifth at last year's national titles and hopes she can win Australian selection to compete internationally.
''I've been sick quite a lot this year and the last international selection competition I had tonsilitis so this is the first technical competition of the year where I'm not sick,'' Henderson said.
''I find I compete much better and feel in better mindset when I know I have to push it to beat other people, instead of just taking on myself.
''But it's a good experience when you're by yourself. It challenges me to push the boundaries and I am trying to beat my other results.''
The national titles will be in Brisbane in December and Henderson hopes to improve on her past results.
It's not how she felt at the end of last year.
After 12 years on the ice, Henderson decided she needed a change and trialled with the ACTAS Cycling Program as well as winning a 25-kilometre mountain bike Duo Classic event.
Henderson showed promise in cycling, but knew her passion was with skating.
She started skating when she was just five years old and despite being away for only four months, Henderson said getting back on the ice was harder than expected.
''I'm a keen mountain biker and I wanted to give it a go … I was low on motivation for skating last year and it was getting less exciting,'' Henderson said.
''I decided to take a break and see how I would go at cycling.
''I won my age group and ACTAS asked if I was interested in trying, so I did. But it made me realise skating is what I love and it definitely reignited my passion.''
A host of young skaters are vying for national selection. The divisions are spread out over two days.
Competition begins at 6pm today.

Karuna has informed me that she won her title, with 86.45 points
She was the first junior to run 50 handicaps at The Women's and Girls' Jogalong.

Ducking The Issue

Thanks to the heavy rains recently, it is my opinion, that the rains have washed the duck droppings from the criterion circuit at Stromlo Forest Park.

The grass track is in good condition for those who wish to run there on a 1 km circuit of the track, or variou other distances in training.

My appearances there are of a random nature, as are the distances run.  The facilities provided are in good condition, and quite often on weekends, parents take their children to ride their bikes in a safe environment.

It takes me half an hour each way  to walk, to and fro, from home, and rarely have I encountered any shower activity from the elements.

The criterion circuit I think is named for Stephen Hodge, who I think was mentioned in the Canberra Times today, as admitting to having used drugs, in the sport of cycling.

BBQ Stakes 17 th October 2012

A welcome return to Carolyne Kramar and to Caroline Campbell, both having recently been overseas.

Matt Henkel, last week's winner was timekeeper, and was joined by his brother for a little chat while he was doing the timekeeping.  Matt was off 12:15, but after his win is now off 13:30 next week.

Helen Larmour turned up;  although a little late for the run, she has not run the stakes for a while.

George Pagotelis also ran, and started from the backmark behind Matthew Murphy, who was second last starter.  Last week's fastest times were by Julie Quinn 23:37, and Richard Jukes 24:08.
 Richard Jukes was the winner with 94 runs, P.B. of 29:25,  on 5th September 2012, and 4 wins.

Second was Simon Heineken, third placed was Gordon Calcino.

Heather Powrie is sitting on 99 runs, Robert Ey is on 97 runs and Tim Wright has 397 under his belt, although he has been helping with recording for the last few weeks.

57 ran today, perhaps 58 including Roxie Tanner.

Lake Tuggeranong Stakes, Tuesday 16 th October 2012

Runners today included Rad Leovic, for the 3km out and back course.
His time was 41:43, and he was not the first to return however.

Peter Foster was first over the line but not the winner. His time was 37:30 from a start of 2:30.

Peter had competed in the Melbourne Marathon in just over 4 hours,  last weekend, and is due to run another marathon shortly.

Six other runners competed.

Daniel Buckley finished at 41:31 from a handicap of 2:30, in 41:31.

Colin Phillips finished at 40:57 from a handicap of 4:00.

Gary Morris finished at 39:50 from a 6:30 handicap. He was pronounsed the winner.

David Low finished at 43:21 from an 11:30 handicap.

Cameron Curry finished at 42:32 from a handicap of 12:45.

There was a headwind on the outward journey only, and a warm 23 degrees or so on the day.

BBQ Stakes 10 th October 2012

Krissa O'Nell was today's timekeeper, and sent everybody onto the course; when that was done she went to buy some lunch ( sandwiches) and returned in time to clock everyone across the finishing line. Krissa.s time last week was her P.B. of 30:19,

Roxie Tanner again had a good run in the stakes, despite having earlier run 6 km in the morning.

Andrew Guild finished in 60 th place, probably because of an earlier 6 km (with Roxie Tanner) in the morning.

Axel Godack put in his slowest run for ages, making his return to the stakes, there is obviously room for improvement, having "gone missing" for a long time.

Roger Pilkington's next long run might be the Melbourne Marathon, if I heard correctly. 

Garry Bowen is doing some data entry for the BBQ Stakes history, he is entering  older results into the data base, and I believe he has been making corrections where duplication of names has been made, and correcting entries when required.

Rad Leovic made a return to the Stakes after his Duathlon World Championship age group medal, and Julie Quinn also returned to the Stakes after her World Championship Rogaining victory.  Anne Young, paid a visit before the run to report on her medical investigations after suffering a dizzy spell a few weeks previously.  She has not been able to find a reason for her medical problem after visiting the doctors, and will probably not be running the Stakes for a while, because of the Veterans Club Track and Field starting soon, and the Vets Half Marathon in August.

Kerrie Tanner is now on a new running program, being 5 minutes run, then 1 minute walk, and is hoping that will help her return to "good form".

BBQ Stakes 3 October 2012

Juliee Quinn returned today, with a World Championship Rogaining  win to be proud of.

58 or so runners today to give her a cheer, and congratulations.

Roxie Tanner had a second official run and split the placings between Kerrie Tanner and Leah Afiabo.

Tim Wright again helped with the recording, Brian Crowe also helped, and last week's winner did the timing, before Kerrie rushed off in haste, after the presentations.

Gabrielle Wright also ran and brought up the last placing in the field.  John Schedding wore his Barcelona Football Club shirt, Matthew Murphy has had one year since his win.

Clarissa O'Neill had a win today, at 39:49, it being five years since her P.B.

Second was Matt Henkel,and 3rd placing ** was Sandy Lolikato, who got his photo in the Canberra Times, while training fot The Canberra Times Fun Run.

The Teams trophy was won by Health, in today's reverse run..
