Lake Ginninderra Handicap 26 th February 2013

Today belonged to Jim Roberts, he became the first to complete 200 Lake Ginninderra handicaps.

He was not the winner but received a bottle of wine to celebrate his achievament.

Jeff Gray was the winner today, even though, before the event, he was unsure of how he would perform.  I think he was wearing lightweight shoes.

Rad Leovic ran today's course in 53 minutes 15 seconds.  A bit slower than usual, but he is cleaning up a lot of records at the Vets Track and field on Thursdays, and completed the Vets Handicap last Sunday.
A more comprehensive report will be made on the dedicated website shortly.

BBQ Stakes 20 th February 2013

Tim Wright was the outstanding competitor in the Stakes today, being rewarded with his Commemorative T - Shirt on completing his 400 th Stakes event.  Well run Tim.  And to keep him active he had a a pacemaker inserted in his chest a few months previously.  Well done Tim.

It is noted that Gabrielle has now achieved over 390 runs herself. They now become the second couple in the Stakes totals.  The leading couple is John and Maryanne Busteed, John with over 900, and Maryann over 150, I'll have to check what the statistics say about their runs.

It was learned that Anne Young, a prolific winner of awards for running has recently had a pacemaker installed, and hopefully can continue her running for many years to come.

Today's winner was Bruce Wight at 50:06 across the line following his 449th run, with a P.B. of 23:44 on 4th Nov 1999,second was Stephen Murphy at 50:15 across the line and third was Gordon Calcino on 50:22 over the line.

We welcomed Speedygeoff today, returning for a run in the Stakes, after upping his running distances.

Friar had a run today, starting earlier than most, so adding to his total of over 1200 runs in the Stakes.

Sandy Lolicato started late today at 29:15, he missed his usual start time of 27:15.

Ben Reay walked and ran today, so helping towards his recovery.

Garry Bowen finished 52 nd today, Dan Buckley 53 rd and Terry Levings was 54 th,

Last night’s track

The highlight was when Thea took the baton in the 4 x 800m relay then handed it back, ten metres further along.

The previous runner had only run 400m!

Also, this track meet was Tony Booth's last before he departs Canberra in a few week's time.

Some 20 years ago, Tony Booth attended to my Blood Clotting problems, I was a constant visitor to his practice.  Now 20 years later, I still suffer from blood clotting, and Dr Ooi, who first recognised my blood clotting problems,  has moved on from the Woden Health Clinic.

BBQ Stakes 13 th February 2013

52 runners today, with Julie Quinn doing the timekeeping after her second win with 26:09 last week.

Fastest male last week was Matthew Murphy at 23:16, a few seconds faster then Richars Juckes.

This week Matthew ran 23:02, Richard Juckes 23:59, and Andrew Blyton ran 23:48.

Roxie Tanner had her second outing for the day, keeping an eye on Kerrie Tanner and helping her along, and being rewarded with a drink after her finish.

Today, Andrew Guild was the winner with 462 runs and a P.B. on 21 st April 1999.

His run time was 33:41.

Second was Raymond Chao, and third home was Dolph Page, must have recovered from his ankle injury.  Gabrielle Wright finished while presentations were being made, thanks to the start time being moved forward ten minutes.  It now gives her a chance of a win in due course, after running more than 389 or so stakes, Tim Wright is due for a 400 run T-Shirt next time he runs, but today he was at work elsewhere.

Steve Smith finished with 32:19,  and was one of the earliest to finish.

Roger Pilkington, still suffering from sciatica problems got his exercise today by riding to and from the stakes, but did not compete today. That is now three weeks with this problem, supposedly sfter seeking treatment, which didn't result in a cure.

Ben Reay finished the course in 57:54, still carrying an injury.

Customs Joggers 1 st February 2013

On a warm day there was a very good field of 28 finishers.  Good to see some old hands returning – Phil Toomey and Keith Smith.  Welcome back to new starter Alan Howe for a second time.

This was the first week of a new point score competition.  The handicapper has adjusted handicaps to finish at 36:30, allowing the slower runners more opportunity to finish at the top of the list.

The point score competition will run through until Friday 21st of June with the grand presentation being on Friday 28th of June. This will give runners the opportunity to complete a maximum of 20 Customs Joggers runs during the point score period, with the season prizes being based on runner’s 15 best weekly scores.  It is possible to win the competition completing only 15 runs, however completing more runs means low scoring results can be dropped from the total.

This week, three prizes are awarded to the first eligible:  Peter Burke, Kevin O’Keeffe and Kerrie Louttit.

Many thanks to Brian and Nick at the Runners Shop.  Please show your support by patronising their sale and, remember, that in addition to the already heavy discounts, you’ll get an extra 10% off if you mention you’re with CJs.

Next CJ’s run will be Friday 8 February 2013.  Prizes will be awarded to first eligible.  Usual charge of $1 will apply.

 12:30 pm near Stage 88.

Eggsitement, The Yolks with us

After getting a batch of double yolk eggs in the one carton, ( At least four from a carton of twelve) I looked on the internet and found lots of stories on double yolk eggs. .

Here's only one story. posted from a website.
-------------------------------------------------------
Double-yolk eggs occur when ovulation occurs too rapidly, or when one yolk becomes joined with another yolk. These eggs may be the result of a young hen's reproductive cycle not yet being synchronized. Some hybrid breeds of hens also produce double-yolk eggs by default. Such eggs are produced in India. Eastern states known for that are West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh.
Some hens will rarely lay double-yolked eggs as the result of unsynchronized production cycles. Although  heredity causes some hens to have a higher propensity to lay double-yolked eggs, these occur more frequently as occasional abnormalities in young hens beginning to lay. Usually, a double-yolked egg will be longer and thinner than an ordinary single-yolk egg. Double-yolked eggs usually lead to observed successful hatchlings only under human intervention, as the chickens interfere with each other's hatching process and die.
Rarely, higher-order yolks occur, although heavier poultry breeds such as the Buff Orpington have been known to lay triple-yolk eggs in their lifetimes.

Lake Ginninderra Handicap 29 th January 2013

Ginninderra Handicap No 353 on Tue 29/01/2013
A reasonably small field of runners turned up
for the first handicap of 2013 –
our 30th birthday year (exact celebration dates
depending on definition of 'birthday' to be advised....).
Many grumbled of a lack of exercise and too much
cheer over the festive season with low expectations
of finishing before 1pm and high expectations
 of discomfort.
One exception was Mark Lound, who having
shed 7kg over the break and being gifted
with a new handicap last year was a slight favourite
over last month's
winner in Simon Yelland. Whilst the temperature
was in the low 20s it was a humid afternoon and a very
sweaty run was in order. Runners also had to navigate
a number of fallen gum trees as a result of last Saturday's fierce
storm. In the end Mark was a comfortable winner over Simon,
earning himself a new handicap in the process, with Darren Hitchman
finishing third. Also of note was the absence of Jim Roberts
who currently sits on 199 runs. Phil Carruthers on 190 runs
showed up - how long will Jim tease him before fronting up
and claiming the first to reach 200 handicaps? Jeff Grey
mentioned registration dates for the noted upcoming
Australian Masters Athletics Championships to be held here in
Canberra over the easter break. To the amazement of at
least one official the 'Masters' category starts at age 30!
A veteran at 30 - who would have thought it?
Officials: Gerard Wildie, Alistair Rogers, Andrew Sutcliffe.

BBQ Stakes 30 th January 2013

Roger Pilkington walked all the way due to having a sore back, even though he rode his bike to and from the event, Jennifer Bright chose a start time not her correct handicap, Helen Larmour was the timekeeper, let her son stay at Questacon, and returned later using her passout, to collect him, alex Kachalkov didn't learn the new starting system until today, George has now moved to Melbourne, Stuart Stockwell receives a participation T-Shirt next run, Phil Toomey is now becoming a regular "Staker", Pater Burke is also regular, and at other events in Canberra including Vets track and field at the AIS.
