This was a particularly cold and windy day. Fortunately, we avoided the rain. Despite the cold, there was again a very good field of 28 starters, so well done all those who braved the weather. This was the first time this year, on the Floriade course and as well as the wind, runners had to contend with the nasty hill. (There will be more Floriade courses to come). Unfortunately, despite requests, there will not be double points for today’s run.

Welcome to new starter Craig Wurz from AG’s.

Thanks to Simon for revising the handicaps. Simon has promised to further tweak the handicaps for next week.

In the above results, Kevin is first eligible: however, as Kevin received the extra prize for finishing closest to 35 minutes last week, he has generously declined a prize this week. This leaves Denis Gray and Geoff Moore as prize winners this week. Denis and Geoff will receive prizes of Runners Shop vouchers or socks next week.

Many thanks also to Brian Wenn and Nick Walshe and the Runners Shop for the prizes of socks and vouchers.

Thanks to Doug for again holding the clock.

This week was the sixth week of a new point score competition, to continue to sometime towards the end of the year. Runners will be able to drop up to four runs. Note that it is necessary to start on your correct time to earn points and not finish before 34 minutes. The above results have not yet been taken into account: however, Tony continues to lead on 205 points, being closely challenged by Bronwyn on 199, John Anderson 177, Simon 173, Mike 164, Yumiko 158 and Denis 154.

Next Customs Joggers Run will be Friday 3 September 2010 at 12:15 pm. We will again use our alternative Floriade course, starting on the bike path near the Archbishop’s House. (This is just across the grass from our usual start). Note that the car park also is not accessible.

The course follows the bike path under Commonwealth Avenue Bridge, past the Ferry Terminal, then turns right through the tunnel and up and over the steep hill, then turn left at the bottom towards the hospital jetty and just before the jetty (do not go past the jetty) veer left on a wide loop, cross the road and follow the bike path back towards the willow trees, turn at the last willow tree, and then back to the start. The course is 5.05 km according to Bronwyn, but has a “slight” hill in the middle. Prizes of Runners Shop vouchers and socks will again be available for the first two eligible finishers on the day. Usual charge of $1 will apply.

Torrens Spring Fling 19th September

I think this is from Paul Veldkamp (hope I've spelt that correctly.

Peta Sheppard is part of the Hartley team.
Adrian Sheppard is her husband, Trevor Jacobs I think is her brother in law.

On Sunday September 19th my Hartley team will be organising the Torrens Spring Fling to raise funds for local charity Hartley Lifecare (see www.hartley.org.au). Activities include a sausage sizzle, second hand book stall, cake stall, face painting and hair cutting (one of our team members is a hairdresser, and she and some of her colleagues are volunteering their time). And we're organising a 5km fun run, on the fire trail around the back of Torrens. It'll be slightly undulating, but we're not going over the top of Mt Taylor.Registration at the Torrens Shops from 8:30 to 9:15, the start is at 9:30 500m up the hill from the shops towards Mt Taylor at the back of the suburb. (I'll send out a course map once we've settled on the course.)Cost: $5 for straight entry, or $8 for entry and one raffle ticket. The raffle ticket normally costs $5, and the raffle prize is a Bianchi 928 Carbon Mono Q Tech Bike valued at $6300.00.Prizes: we hope to have a few smallish prizes for the winners.Cheers,VelkroPS Davo, Fluoro, Ads and Peta, Andrew Johnson and Andrew Kingston are part of the team.PPS If you have any second hand books you'd like to donate to the cause, please let me know.

BBQ Stakes 25th August 2010 and Results

A cold and rather windy day, even then, 53 runners participated.

Victoria Hennig, the winner at the previous event, after being rehandicapped, finished in 44th place.

The winner was Talwar Singh finishing in 6th place, but was the first eligible finisher. He has completed 73 runs, for 4 wins, with 47 runs since his previous win.

He also runs at the Lake Tuggeranong Stakes on Tuesdays on a regular basis, travelling from Woden to participate. Matthew Murphy in a time of 22:47 was the fastest runner on the day, while Kerrie Tanner broke the 30 minute mark again, she is one of the trainers for the Canberra Times training group, which runs in the early mornings twice a week. There are around 100 training in that group, with a report appearing in The Canberra Times weekly on the group's progress.

Darren Leseberg the winner now has 5 wins, if I heard correctly, with a PB of 25:02, a rate of 4:10.

Bruce Wight ran the distance, after having recovered from his achilles injury from a couple of weeks ago, and Ian Hore running again after his Appendix operation from a few weeks ago, but feeling slightly sore around his midsection, he ran the Lakes Stakes yesterday, but it will be a few weeks before he resumes his games of golf. Adrian Plunkett started early today, after suffering from a golf related strain. He had three holes to finish over the weekend, when he strained a muscle when placing his golf ball on the golf tee..

BBQ Stakes 11 th August 2010

Forecasts for the track condition today were dismal, with heavy rain having fallen the previous day and night, during the morning and lighter rain sprinkling during the run.

As it turned out, predictions were accurate, with Greg Regester first away and first back confirming the wet and muddy track. Ian Hore who did the timing today had walked the track yeterday, and also predicted bad track conditions today.

Nevertheless, 34 hardy souls ran in the Stakes today. Mick Corlis, who was intending to do a 6 km run today, was convinced to run the 6 km BBQ course too, but did not wish to be included as a competitor. The winner today was Victoria Hennig with Marc Wilson in second place, Hugh Moore in third, and Gary Bowen in 4 th place.

Kathleen Bleakley commenced at 24:40, and was last to finish in a run time of 34:23.

Yes, someone stayed behind until she had finished, and collected her jacket and backpack.

Kerrie Tanner was again in charge and read out a long list of recent P B's by participants.

Shelter against the rain was provided by gathering pre and post race in the underpass near the starting location. I think there was one person who rode their bike to the start, a tough go in the conditions, and there was one dog, taken out on the run. Those who had run in the City to Surf on the previous weekend were congratulated.

When results have been compiled, I will try and post them at this bolgspot.

BBQ Stakes 4 th August 2010

Peter Bilos received his 200 th T - Shirt today.

He finished at 37:53, 37:53, which would normally mean he could not win. One has to finish beyond 39:30 to win on the day. However the T-shirt made up for that anomoly.Dolph Page, was mentioned as possibly first for the health team in the team trophy division, tell me if I got that wrong, as I wasn't listening closely to the announcements.

Bruce Wight was the first to return, although it was a flare up of his achilles injury, that he had before the run. So he gets a DNF for today.

Heather Powrie held the clock after her first ever win the previous run, she now has something like 27 runs, and told us she was leaving for other climes shortly.

Steve Smith filled in as the handicapper again, while Kerrie is taking a break from those duties.

Good luck to all who are travelling to Sydney this weekend for the 40th City to Surf run; I saw in the Newspaper (SMH) this morning that 80,000 are expected in that event this year.

Bob reported that:- Bob Harlow is satisfied with 1:38:22 in today's half marathon in Sturminster Newton, Dorset. Conditions were good: overcast and about 21°. The course wasundulating, along country lanes the whole way, and 480 finishers. This is my 8th running race so far during my trip to the UK.

Carolyne reported that Chesil Beach is just South of where they are staying, is a shingle beach on the World Heritage Jurassic Coast, where pirates could tell within a few metres where they were by the size of the stones.

The evolution of Veterans Athletics

Foreword

What are myth, legend and history? Can they be part of the same thing? How should a critical period be represented, particularly by someone who was a significant player in it? Does the participant viewpoint make the story less valid, providing caricature rather than perspective, understanding and insight; revealing current affairs rather than contextual analysis?
John (Jack) Carroll VC, from Kurrawang (near Kalgoorlie), WA, won his award for actions at Messines Ridge during World War 1. Bean records these in his official history and the Australian War Memorial displays the official citation. Bean's account is adequate. The citation is graphic. But Carroll's family's account, as oral history, provides a more revealing picture. "Seeing his mates torn to pieces around him, Jack 'lost his mind', went berserk and charged the German line. He bayoneted a few to death and kept running forward killing a few more Germans, and capturing their machine gun nest." The first fourteen words don't appear in the official records but they allow us greater insight into this incredible man. Were they his words to his family? It appears so. They have been passed down for 90 years. He returned to WA, married, had no children, spoke very little about his experiences and died in obscurity aged 80. He was given a full military funeral and was buried at Perth's Karrakatta Cemetery. His VC was given to the AWM in 1989.
This example highlights the difficulty for the participant historian. Jack Pennington OAM has had to develop his records, memories and references into a coherent story from such a perspective. But Jack was not only a participant he was a significant player. Yet, just as Carroll's family was able to add insight from the inside, the potential exists for Jack to add depth to his representation from his insider perspective. He certainly tells us his story, the beginnings of Veterans (now Masters) athletics in this country with some hint of the international beginnings, and a colourful, rich, contextual one it is. But his story is not confined to the results sheets or the minutes or the official policies. Jack creates a tapestry, weaving subjective and objective together, seeing inspiration, desperation and perspiration as important elements for preservation. We are grateful for Carroll's family's words because they add to our understanding of the man. That too is Jack Pennington's purpose for his story.
The feel of the times, the smell of the contest (on and off the field), these are the essences Jack wants to reveal in his text. They are a reflection of the man. His passionate, forthright, but knowledgeable discourse sets him apart. I have known only one other like him: Percy Wells Cerutty. In fact they share many similarities, but passion and forthrightness stand out. Jack is a legend in his own time. Author, athlete, researcher, lecturer, teacher, administrator, guinea pig, editor: Jack is a Renaissance Man of the sporting world. Whether in learned papers, teaching nationally or internationally, creating newspapers, grinding away on treadmills while attached to machines, winning medals, demonstrating technique or timing splits in races, Jack created his own niche.
It is history that Herb Elliott beat Mery Lincoln in a mile race in Perth, just part of the Elliott legend of being undefeated in the mile and 1500m during his senior career. But that result, as history, doesn't tell anyone that this race may have been one of the greatest Elliott ever had! It was held on a grass track marked out on a suburban football (Australian Football) oval in Leederville. Secondly, Elliott only won the race on the judge's call (no photo finish in those days for Saturday club athletics). I was on the finish line. I would have awarded the race to Lincoln even though Elliott was a hero. Looking at their faces after the announcement I thought that Elliott would always remember that race and Lincoln would
never forget it. We gain further insight when we understand that their respective coaches, Cerutty the philosopher and Stampfl the scientist, despised each other, not that Elliott was ever friendly towards his opponents.
It is such nuances and background that Jack strives to bring to history. He wants to create living images. He wants his readers be a part of history for a moment. He sets himself difficult tasks.
Questions flow freely from Jack's revelations. Why did Veterans Athletics rise on the spirit of those who fought in WW2? Why were the amateur code and democratic structure such rallying points for so much of the early policies? Why has that democratic spirit (eg rotating presidents, informal nomination for executive positions) been replaced by a corporate policy based on exclusion leading to careerist outcomes? The social, economic and political context has shaped this sport and Jack has provided sound evidence for further analysis.
But above all else Jack has set us on a journey to capture the spirit of a movement, one that was at the forefront of developing a sport to suit the needs of those who were getting older. People could contentedly find their own level, whether at the dynamically competitive or at the leisurely active. It allowed all or anyone to achieve those spectrum opposites in an organisation with few constraints.
It is a moot point whether today's organisation reflects the founders' ideals but by any measure it provides for their purposes.
Jack Pennington OAM: thank you for your creativity. passion and foresight.

The evolution of Veterans Athletics

I received this book in the mail late this week.

It is by Jack Pennington and can be purchased from Jack at 24 Alberga St Kaleen.

It carries a foreword by Ray Green, which I am particularly impressed by.

I have not yet read this book, but am very impressed, as I was kept informed of the saga behind the scenes.

Jack had a friend who was preparing the book, who died mid preparation, then his friend's wife took over the preparation, and she also had troubles in the preparation.

More later, after I have had a read of the finished book.

I believe Jack has forwarded a copy of his book to each of the Veterans Club's state secretaries.

The Australian Masters Athletics also has a copy.
